AI Spacesuits Turn Astronauts Into Cyborg Biologists

Featured in Wired Science this research is being led by Patrick McGuire, a scientist in the Department of Geophysical Sciences.  The full research research paper was published in arxiv.org a freely available repository of scientific  e-prints in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, and quantitative finance and statistics.

Cut the Cord: Connecting to our Mobile Users

The University of Chicago's John Crerar Library will host the sponsored Chicago area local showing of  Medical Library Association's upcoming webcast, Cut the Cord: Connecting to our Mobile Users. 

According to the MLA Distance Education web page, the goal of the webcast is "to familiarize information professionals with current and emerging mobile technologies, innovative initiatives using mobile devices, useful mobile software applications, and funding options for projects using mobile devices."

Participants living outside the Chicago area should go to the MLA website to investigate showings in their local area or individual registration at http://www.mlanet.org/education/distance_ed/mobile/ .

The Crerar Library is a National Network of Library of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region (GMR)-sponsored site; participation is free.  Participants will receive up to 3.5 MLA CE contact hours.  Light refreshments will be served.

Printing on USITE Macs on Crerar 1st floor

Two new trials: Conference Proceedings Citation Index; AMA Manual of Style

Take a moment to review two new electronic resources trials, and tell us what you think:

Conference Proceedings Citation Index is available in Web of Science.  It includes the published literature of conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions in a wide range of disciplines.  The trial ends Aug 17, 2009.

AMA Manual of Style is available from Oxford University Press.  This, the 10th edition, is the first online AMA Manual.   Use the drop-list to go directly to a section, or used the Advanced Search to search the full text, section headers, or the index.  The trial ends Aug 28, 2009.

New copiers/printers

Printing Effective July 31, Canon Business Solutions, the new copier vendor for the Library and the Residence Halls & Commons, will replace the old photocopiers and networked laser printers with new Canon multifunction devices (MFDs) which copy, scan, print and fax.  The old microform machines will be replaced with new Canon microform equipment which provides scanning.

Noise Due to electrical work in the Crerar Library, there may be drilling and/or loud, sudden noises Thursday, July 23 through Tuesday, July 28 from 8:00am - 3:00pm.

If needed, ask for ear plugs at the Reference Desk.

Dr. Janet Rowley to speak at Crerar Library

RowleyInLab On Monday, May 18, at 4:00 pm, Dr. Janet Rowley, Professor of Medicine, Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics, will speak at the John Crerar Library in conjunction with the National Library of Medicine’s exhibition, Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians, in which Dr. Rowley is featured.  We hope that you will be able to join us for the talk, followed by a discussion and refreshments.
